R-410A is the hingeTake a house at the city median build year of 1981. It is on at least its second system, probably its third. That system is almost certainly an R-410A unit installed some time after the R-22 phase-down.
Manufacture and import of new residential split systems using refrigerants above 700 GWP — R-410A sits at about 2,088 — was prohibited from 1 January 2025 under the EPA's Technology Transitions rule. Existing R-410A stock can still be installed until supplies are depleted, and existing systems remain legal to repair. But the pool of matched coils and compressors is finite and shrinking, and a mismatched replacement compressor is a warranty and efficiency problem rather than a fix.
So the honest comparison is not $850–$2,400 against nothing. It is $850–$2,400 buying a few more years on a system whose replacement parts are running out, against $6,500–$11,000 less up to $1,000 of Duke rebate for a system on the current refrigerant.
